Pre-Apartheid Era Laws: Nationality and Flag Act No. 40 of 1927
The Nationality and Flag Act of 1927 denied Indians the right to become South African citizens by naturalization.
Amended by the Provincial Government Act No. 32 of 1961 ("Republic of South Africa Constitution Act").
Also required the newly created, and somewhat controversial, Union Flag to be flown along side the Union Jack on all official occasions on government buildings.
Amended by Flags Amendment Act, No.
18 of 1957, when the Union Jack was excluded from official use.
