How to Seal Natural Stone Back Splashes

    • 1). Make sure your backsplash is completely clean and has been dry for at least 24 hours. It should be free of dust, oil, grease or dirt. Tape a length of plastic sheeting over your counter, and apply a thin strip of silicon gel across the top of the tape. This will prevent the sealer from dripping onto the counter and save cleanup time later.

    • 2). Saturate a soft cotton cloth with stone sealer and apply it generously to the backsplash, allowing it to penetrate deeply. Make sure you apply the sealer evenly over all surfaces, and immediately wipe any excess that spills onto the counter. Even with the protection of the plastic sheeting, it is important to keep the sealer away from the counter.

    • 3). Wait for one hour and then apply a second coat. This coat may be applied more sparingly than the first coat, but still be generous in your application and allow it to penetrate deeply.

    • 4). Apply a third coat more sparingly. Buff off any residue with a clean soft cloth. After five to seven days, your surface is water repellent and ready to use.
