How to Install DirectX 9 on Vista
- 1). Locate DirectX download software. Open up your favorite web browser and you'll actually find many sites on Google that will link you to a copy of DirectX. However, not all of these sites are equal. Your best bet to avoid spyware or Trojan horses on your Vista system is to go with a site you trust. For this example, CNET (see Resources) has a great selection of games, utilities and programs that are virus and spyware free.
- 2). Click on the tab marked "Downloads." Next to the CNET logo should be the words "download.com." Once you've finished that, note there is a search window right next to those two words. Click on that now.
- 3). Type in "DirectX 9," "DirectX 9.0" or "DirectX 9.0c" in the "Search" bar at the top of the page. You may see some matches that are in a very large box. Do not click on those links because they are third-party sponsors. Scroll down until you see nonboxed "DirectX" hyperlinks; you have what you need here.
- 4). Download the software. On the first page, one of the smaller boxes will read "Microsoft DirectX" and then a number (as of June 15, 2009, it is 9.26.1530). Click on that and you can start downloading this version or you can download a previous version if you wish by noting the pull-down menu and selecting the version you want.
- 5). Tell Vista to "Allow" the application to run. Vista has a built-in security feature that will ask you if you'll allow it to proceed. Once you have downloaded the program and double-clicked it to begin installation, you will be presented with a dialog box asking for your permission to allow this program. Select "Allow" for this program to run.
