- 1). Check your paycheck or W-2 tax form to find the tax identification number. The IRS requires employers to print it on your W-2 form. Some employers elect to list it on pay stubs. Form 1099, used for self-employed contractors, also contains the tax identification number.
- 2). Request a tax identification number from the business. Call, write or forward an email to the finance department to receive the tax identification number. Most businesses respond quickly to requests for tax identification numbers.
- 3). Conduct a private search for the number online. These companies charge a nominal fee to provide an extensive database of business tax identification numbers. Most people try this option if they fail to find tax identifications numbers through a preliminary search.
- 4). Contact the IRS to obtain a tax identification number. The IRS will require you to know the legal business name and the state(s) it operates in. Call the IRS at 800-829-4933 or visit your local office for additional information.
