    • The world of online communication has exploded in recent years and one of the top tools over the last decade has been the instant messenger. Many versions have become available including Yahoo Messenger, AIM and MSN Live. Installing programs provides enhanced features, such as video and voice chat, and even custom backgrounds. Prior to being able to use the program, users must overcome some basic installation issues and problems.

    Third Party Programs

    • There are many programs that interfere with the operation of MSN Live. These include many toolbars and other messengers that might already be installed on your computer, sometimes unknowingly. To uninstall these programs go to the start menu in Windows XP, then click run, or just use the box if you're running Vista, then type "Control Appwiz.cpl." When you press enter, any third party programs on your computer will come up. All programs that must be uninstalled for installation include: Smiley Central, Kiwee Toolbar, MyWebSearch Toolbar, Messenger Plus, MacroGaming SweetIM and Info Pen.

Older versions of common programs such as Adobe Flash can also result in installation issues. By downloading the latest, versions, drives and software, MSN Live should function properly on your computer.

    DirectX

    • Advanced programs often require advanced drivers and operations to function. One such tool is DirectX, which must be installed on your computer to run properly. Installation can shut down, requiring you to install the compatible version for your attempted download of Windows Live. Download DirectX from Microsoft.com/directx.

    Spyware and Corrupted Files

    • Spyware can be installed on your computer without your knowledge. It can also create installation problems for MSN Live. A spyware check of your computer can be run at microsoft.com/protect/computer/spyware/default.mspx.

Another issue can be with corrupted files which can interfere with MSN Live. The key to eliminating corrupted files is to usually do a clean install. Different from the normal "uninstall," the clean install completely removes all components associated with Windows Live Messenger. It will then proceed to reinstall the program.
