How to Make Your Own Non Toxic Algae Cleaner
- 1). Break up barley bales and loosen the straw. The amount of barley required depends on the size of your pond. You'll need roughly five bales, or 225 lbs., of barley per acre of water.
- 2). Place the barley straw into multiple mesh nets. The more mesh nets, the better because it allows you to place the barley in different locations in your water source.
- 3). Place the nets of barley into the water before the growing season for algae. March or April is a good time to do this. Leave the nets in the water for a period of 6 months. This is the life cycle of the barley. After every six months, pull the barley out and repeat the cycle with new barley. The number of cycles needed depends on a number of factors, but you should start to see results within a few weeks.
