Descendants from Mongolia

• Mongolia is a country in east and central Asia bordered by Russia on the north and China on the south, west and east. It is surrounded by mountain ranges on the north and west and the Gobi Desert on the south. According to the Mongolia Growth Group, the population of Mongolia consists of more than 90 percent Mongols, which are about 2.8 million people. This country is also home to the Mongol leader Kublai Khan, whose empire led to the spread of the Mongol race across the world. When he ruled during the 13th century, he divided the empire into multiple states ruled by the Mongol lords.
  
  

Descendants from China

• During the 12th century, the Mongols became a leading tribe that had power in northern China. The following century further expanded the rule of the Mongols in China through the leadership of Kublai Khan. He took over the Chinese capital by defeating the Chinese Song empire. He moved the Mongol empire's capital from Central Asia to Beijing and he declared himself emperor of China in 1271. According to China's 2000 census, about 5.8 million of the country are Mongol descendants.
  
  

Descendants from Russia

• The Mongol descendants in Russia are primarily the Buryats, a major northernmost subgroup of the Mongols and an ethnic minority group in the southcentral region of Siberia. This population lives in the Buryat Republic, a federal subject of Russia. Many of the Buryats live in the Russo-Mongolian border. According to the Prayway website, about 75 percent of all Northern Mongolians live in Siberia's Lake Baikal region. Like most Mongol descendants, the Buryats share distinct nomadic customs for their lifestyle and livelihood.
  
  

Other Descendants

• Being a large empire in the ancient world, the Mongols spread throughout various parts of northern, central and eastern Asia. Aside from the larger Mongol populations in modern Mongolia, China and Russia, some smaller number of Mongols exist as notable communities in South Korea, Czech Republic, United Kingdom and even in the United States. The invasions in Persia and India during the time of Kublai Khan also led to the spread of the Mongols in some parts of northern India and Afghanistan.
