How to Loosen Rusted Exhaust Bolts

    • 1). Spray the rusted bolt with a penetrating oil. Use a good quality oil such as Strong Arm or PB Blaster. Allow the penetrating oil to stay on the bolt for a couple of hours or even overnight. Place a socket wrench on the bolt and try to loosen it. Spray the bolt again if it doesn't budge. It may be necessary to spray it numerous times over a period of several days to loosen it.

    • 2). Apply a freezing-penetrating oil product, such as Loctite, to the bolt. Loctite freezes the bolt which causes the metal to contract, producing small microscopic cracks in the rust. This makes it easier for the penetrating oil to work its way down into the bolt. Loctite works in a matter of minutes.

    • 3). Heat up the bolt with a propane torch. This should be the last resort because it runs the risk of cracking the bolt head if it becomes too hot. Hold the torch on the bolt until the head of the bolt begins to glow red. This will cause the metal to expand and break the bond of the rust. Cool the bolt with cold water. Put penetrating oil on the bold and allow it to sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Loosen and remove the bolt with a socket wrench.
