    Assess your Abilities and Tools

    • You never want to go into a job that you can't finish, which is why it's always important to make sure you have the ability, tools and materials necessary to complete the job. The type of counter top you want will also affect whether you should do it yourself or hire a professional. Kitchen-Counter-Tops.net notes that many choose laminate counter tops because they're easy to install yet still offer many benefits. If you're going to use something like granite you may want to call a professional. Granite typically requires special tools, finish carpentry skills and a team of workers.

    Preparation

    • Measuring is the most important step in the entire process. When you go to buy the counter top from the fabricator or retailer, provide as specific and detailed directions as possible to ensure that you get what you want. Many suppliers have instructions or guidelines, so check before you measure. The dimensions of your cabinets usually offer an accurate way to measure for counter tops. Sketch your kitchen and mark the sketch with your measurements in spots that indicate what the measurement applies to. End pieces that are exposed will need a matching laminate end cap so write "end cap" on any exposed sides.

    Removing the Old Counter Top

    • If your sink has a lip that fits over the old counter top or you plan on saving the sink, it will need to be removed first. Turn off your home's water supply and disconnect the faucet's connections and sink drain. Use a prying tool to pry the sink out. If you're keeping the sink, be as gentle as you can when prying the sink out. Older counter tops may be nailed to the cabinetry. These will need to be pried off while newer counter tops are usually screwed and glued in. It may make removal easier to use a reciprocating saw to remove sections of the counter top, as long as you don't damage the cabinetry.

    Installing the New Counter Top

    • Before you install the new counter top you need to screw in the build-up strips. You can either glue the strips to the bottom of the counter top or screw them to the top of the cabinets, whichever you find easier. When you get to the scribing process, make sure you take your time and work accurately. Scribing is sanding the counter top's edges down slightly to get the perfect fit for your kitchen. You can always scribe a counter top more than once if you need to, so don't overdo it.
