How to Tell if an Air Conditioner Leaks

    • 1). Turn off the thermostat. Turn off the main power to the air conditioner unit either by unplugging the power supply or by turning off the circuit breaker switch in the breaker box.

    • 2). Go to the compressor unit, which is generally in the outdoor air conditioning system box. Remove the back cover or, depending on the design, remove the top of the unit. Unscrew the holding screws and lift the cover or panel off to reveal the internal components.

    • 3). Visually inspect the lines and pipes inside the unit. The freon storage may be labeled as such. Inspect the lines and pipes running from the freon storage unit. Look for staining on the pipes -- a sign of possible leakage.

    • 4). Turn on the TIF 5000 detector. The red light should turn on to indicate power.

    • 5). Put a new sensor-tip filter cover on the TIF's sensor tip.

    • 6). Hold the TIF in one hand with the sensor tip extended. Hold the tip close to the air conditioner's pipes and lines. Slowly move the tip across each line and tip. If a tone emits from the TIF, stop and inspect the section the sensor was over when the tone went off.

    • 7). Continue slowly moving the sensor tip over each line and pipe making a note of spots where the tone emits.
