Not many people would think about starting a business trip without 1st making a plan. Some of us have a navigation unit in our cars or a hand-held one we can carry around. There are many developers of these tools. In our illustration let's name the unit Gloriamine has a feminine voice. If yours is male, you might not want to use the name Gloria.

The majority of these devices operate in much the same way.

1st, all of them contain a map or can download a map of the territory. Most of their maps cover a very large area. By way of illustration, all of the USA and the southern Canadian provinces. But, the map is not reality it's only a illustration of the terrain. Later in the article we will review this again. What's wonderful about that is you have access to the entire map any time, but do not have to worry about it all. This means you only have to concentrate on a short section of road. You can use the same method with a paper map.

Next, decide where you want to go. You will not have to concern yourself about the specific turns. All you really need to do is to enter your destination into the machine's screeh. Some of the machines will ask you if you would like a fast route or a scenic route. Once you have decided the best route you are set to go.

Third, start driving. You don't have to worry about which way to start out. You can even go in entirely the wrong direction. The voice in the machine will keep you on track regardless of what you do. Wrap your mind around this idea. If you take a left when you should go right, Gloria will tell you to, "Please take a U-turn if possible". The machine will never yell, never get angry and never get frustrated. The navigation voice will only give you suggestions. You can take some and you can leave some. You don't have to do it, but if you don't she'll provide another suggestion, "Take the next available left and then the next left after that". And, so it goes until you hear, "You have arrived at your destination".

How does a navigation system actually relate to a business situation?

Far too many businesses go without a guidance system. The majority of businesses simply address issues as they arise. When something happens they deal with it. If something doesn't happen they don't have to do anything. Frankly, this isn't necessarily a bad idea. If you operate a business in a fairly tight, non-competitive space with few surprises, it could work fine.

Nonetheless, it's actually pretty simple and advisable to utilize the navigation system. Plus, it works really well.

And you know, you operate in a real environment. A map is not a real environment and is only a tool. It is not the real land.

Nonetheless, each and every business should have a map representing the territory it is operating within. The map needed for a business concerns data about customers, employees and all the other factors affecting it. Any business situation this map is better known as a situational analysis. We build this and revise it with periodic situational analyses. Like a map, the situational analysis is only used for reference purposes.

Instead of physical destinations. Our business destinations are the goals we set. These goals can be long-term, annual or multi-month goals or short term weekly goals. In order to reach business goals we take relatively short term actions. Publicly record everyone's goals and objectives. These and business goals are exactly the same as the destination typed into Gloria's keyboard.

The individual members of the team will be at various stages of on-track and off-track at any given time. Periodic progress reporting meetings to ascertain where people are on their goals. Then, everyone can make suggestions to each other. And, everyone is free to follow or reject the suggestions. This is just exactly the same as the way you would respond to your navigation system.

Install a guidance system in your company somewhat like what we've described here. You will find it to be a terrific advantage to you.
