    Triclopyr Method

    • 1). Cut stems of the saltcedar plant as close to the ground as possible using a chainsaw, axe or lopper. Aim for within 5 cm of the surface. The best time to kill the plants by killing its roots is in fall when they are doing most of their growth.

    • 2). Apply a complete layer of triclopyr-containing herbicide immediately after cutting the plant. Coat over the entire cut area of the plant stump and the perimeter of the cuts. Herbicides are sometimes necessary for controlling tamarisk because physical removal works only temporarily and plants eventually resprout.

    • 3). Reapply herbicides to any new sprouts that appear four months to one year after initial application.

    Imazapy Method

    • 1). Apply imazapy herbicide on the leaves of an intact saltcedar using a spray bottle or other application, until they are wet. Follow the instructions on the bottle. Alternatively, you can remove the tree with a chainsaw and apply the chemical to any emerging sprouts. In large areas, aerial applications are the best way to apply imazapy. Professional help may be best to avoid harming nearby native plants.

    • 2). Reapply imazapy every few months, or even more often, to prevent shoots from developing. When applying to a stump, make sure not to disturb it for two years to allow the chemical to spread through the tree. The shoots should die with one year, while roots will die in about two years.
