Soft Waves Hairstyles

    • If you already have naturally wavy or curly hair, you are one step ahead of the game. However, there are some basic products that will benefit you: sculpting mousse, spray gel and/or hairspray. Depending on the size of waves you want, you will need a set of rollers--either hot or Velcro--and a curling iron. For heat-free styling, use a comb and two elastic bands.

    The Look

    • After washing and towel drying your hair, apply a dollop of mousse evenly throughout it. Blow dry your hair, and section it off in 2-inch pieces with a comb. Use rollers to roll your hair away from your face. Secure each roller, and allow it to set completely (about 5 minutes for hot rollers and 20 minutes for Velcro rollers). Remove rollers, and work waves out with fingertips.

Set your hairstyle with hairspray or spray gel. If you want to create your own random waves, use a curling iron to direct curls the way you want them to go and to determine how loose or tight they are. After drying your hair, part it as you normally would. Take 1- to 2-inch sections, and wrap each one individually around the barrel of the curling iron. Hold for 5 seconds. As soon as you release the curl, spray it with hairspray. Once you've created all your curls, use your fingers to loosen waves and style as desired. Use a final sprits of hairspray to set the style.

    Heat-Free Waves

    • For a super simple way to achieve soft, sexy waves, try styling them without heat. After washing and drying your hair, form a part down the center of your head all the way to the back as if you were creating pigtails. Clip off one section, and begin braiding the loose section of hair from the top of your head all the way down to the ends. You could braid just the ends if you prefer that look, but beginning at the top will create an all over wave. Secure the end of the braid with an elastic band. Repeat the braid on the other section of hair.

Use this method before bedtime because sleeping in the braids will allow the style to set completely. In the morning, undo the braids and comb waves out with your fingers. Apply a little bit of shine serum all over or scrunch in some mousse for a firmer hold.
