Indoor gardening appeals to many people, but in particular, the house proud gardener. Maintaining indoor plants can at times be quite time consuming, but the end result far outweighs the time required. Indoor gardens can be on the expensive side and because of this; most people see this as an investment.

To minimize your costs and failure rate choose plants that thrive in an indoor environment. Most indoor plants can't be located in direct sun so make sure you read the maintenance instructions to ensure the plant is placed in the best possible position and looked after as directed. There are many advantages to growing plants indoors that include a better air quality inside and can give a dull room that dramatic boost it needs.

When choosing an indoor plant from the nursery, bare in mind that the plants have had constant attention; water and fed everyday and kept in the ideal environment, so they are looking their best. Be sure to check the maintenance instructions as you don't want to choose a plant that requires more maintenance than what you are prepared to undertake.

The ideal environment for most indoor plants is a warm, humid environment which means your home needs to be warm with regulated heating to avoid fluctuations in temperature when the season changes. When you bring your plant home be aware that if it is going from one environment to another, it may need time to acclimatize to the new environment.

Initially when you bring your plants home, place them in a protected position outside of your home with no direct sunlight and gradually reduce the daily feeding and watering that was given at the nursery. When you notice your plant has new growth, you can be confident that it is adapting to its new environment and can be moved indoors.

Which plants should you choose?

Two of the most common indoor plants are the weeping fig (ficus benjamina) and the peace lily (spathyphyllum wallisii). The weeping fig is one of the toughest indoor plants. It can survive long periods of neglect, which is great if time is at a premium. The weeping fig has an indoor lifespan of approximately 10 years, the good news is that it can be planted outdoors as it is tolerant to full sun as well as part shade, but it can grow into a very large tree.

The peace lily has beautiful dark green foliage with an elegant white flower. The peace lily is not as tolerant as the weeping fig in that it can only be placed in areas of low light and does not require a lot of watering.

Indoor plants do more than look great in your home, they help to absorb toxins in the air and give out oxygen to refresh the air in rooms throughout the home. If you are new to indoor gardening the weeping fig and peace lily is a great place to start and as you build your experience and confidence, you can begin to tender a wider and more interesting selection of plants.
