The Fly Away Plastic Bed Liner Story
This may not seem to have anything to do with a plastic bed liner, but bear with me.
The setting is a family trip.
We're cruising down a 4 lane highway in rural Kentucky on the way back home from Illinois.
That's where my mother-in-law lives.
There's nearly no traffic and perfect visibility.
I'm driving our Chevy van and it's quiet, probably the children in the back are napping...
Then far ahead something comes into view.
It's either in the road or right next to the road way up ahead.
It's large and dark, but it isn't clear what it is...
We get closer.
It gets larger...
What is that? It gets closer.
Still can't quite make it out.
Finally, it's clear that it's not moving and it's just on the edge of the highway.
It's approaching...
What in the world is that??? Ahhh...
Now I see...
It's a plastic bed liner...
right there in the road.
Bet the guy never even noticed it fly away, but fly away it did.
He probably really wondered where that thing went when he stepped out of the pickup and looked back.
And that thing could have killed somebody when it flew back.
A plastic bed liner is a serious piece of material.
See, plastic liners are one of the very best liners to protect a truck bed if you do really rough hauling.
Here's the problem though.
Loose fitting liners let air behind them and that does several bad things:
Probably the best way to get this kind of liner is to look at a multi-piece liner instead of a one piece drop in bedliner.

Here's the problem though.
Loose fitting liners let air behind them and that does several bad things:
- The liner vibrates and wears away paint underneath causing rust and corrosion,
- Moving liners can eventually tear loose and fly away like our example,
- Liners can trap water underneath and rust away a truck bed,
- Loose liners are noisy from the wind whipping over and around.
Probably the best way to get this kind of liner is to look at a multi-piece liner instead of a one piece drop in bedliner.
