How to Wallpaper a Kitchen Backsplash

    • 1). Sand the wall in the area of the backsplash with a medium-grade sandpaper. This will roughen the surface and help the wallpaper adhere better. Wipe the wall with a damp cloth to remove any dust or dirt and allow to dry.

    • 2). Draw a straight line from the edge of the cabinet to the top of the counter with the ruler and pencil. You can use a plumb line or a level to determine when this line is straight.

    • 3). Measure the distance between the bottom of your cabinets and the edge of the counter. This is the area you'll need to fill with your wallpaper. Cut a section of paper this length plus 4 inches.

    • 4). Dip the sheet of wallpaper in a sink full of warm water. Remove the wallpaper from the water and fold it with the adhesive side together. Set it aside on the counter for two minutes. This is called booking and allows the adhesive on the wallpaper to develop.

    • 5). Paint the section of wall on which you'll hang this first sheet of wallpaper with the adhesive. The moisture and warmth of kitchens can make wallpaper more likely to fail to adhere. The adhesive combined with the glue already on the wallpaper will help it to stick tight.

    • 6). Apply the wallpaper to the wall, aligning the left edge with the line you drew. Use the brush to smooth the wallpaper in place. Make sure it's straight and adjust if necessary.

    • 7). Go over the wallpaper with the roller to flatten it completely.

    • 8). Press the ruler to the edge of the paper against the cabinet and cut off the excess paper with the razor knife. Do the same for the bottom edge.

    • 9). Unwind more wallpaper from the roll. Hold the edge of the uncut paper up to the first sheet and line up the pattern. Measure how much paper you'll need to cut to match the pattern and cut off this much.

      Wet, book and paste this next strip of paper. Apply it to the wall and trim the edges as you did the first. Continue all the way around the wall. Take extra care smoothing the wallpaper into corners.
