How to Remove Underlayment From Vinyl Flooring
- 1). Cut the vinyl flooring into manageable sections, such as 12-inch-square sections. Use a sharp utility knife to cut through the vinyl.
- 2). Wedge a putty knife into the cut seams and hold it at a 45-degree angle to the floor. Strike the handle of the putty knife with a hammer to drive the knife between the vinyl and the underlayment. This will peel the vinyl off the underlayment. Repeat this until you have removed all of the flooring and exposed the screws or nails that hold the underlayment to the subfloor.
- 3). Locate and remove all of the screws or nails that hold the underlayment to the sub floor. Use a screwdriver for screws and a claw hammer for nails. Work in sections just as you did with the vinyl. In most cases, the underlayment will not be a solid sheet of plywood but will be several sheets.
- 4). Lift the underlayment up from the subfloor and remove it from the home.
