Annual flowers in the "Golden State" of California complete their life cycle and flower in a single year. They flower, producing seed, and then die within the growing season. Many annuals are endemic (limited to) California, including: The California Gilia; Holocarpha virgata or yellowflower tarweed; Hesperolinon breweri or Brewer's dwarf flax; and Navarretia prolifera or burr pincushionplant. - California poppypoppy image by Alison Bowden from Fotolia.com

California has three varieties of lupines: Lupinous succulentus; succulent lupine; and arroyo lupine. The lupine flowers change from white to purple as they are pollinated. The Lupinous succulentus is the easiest to grow, while the arroyo lupine thrives in harsher environments.
