How to Clean Your Trumpet at Home
- 1). Fill the bathtub with about six inches of lukewarm water, enough to cover the trumpet lying on its side. If desired, add a small amount of soap and mix with hands until you have warm, bubbly water.
- 2). Lay a bath towel out on the bathroom floor.
- 3). Dismantle all parts of the trumpet and place them on the towel. Remove the mouthpiece and all slides, including the first, second and third valve slides. Unscrew the valves from the valve casings and the valve caps from the bottom of the valve casings. Wipe the inside of the valve casings with a cleaning cloth or paper towel.
- 1). Place all parts of the trumpet except for the valves into the bathtub. Lay the trumpet on its side so that the spot for the second valve slide faces up. Place all slides and the mouthpiece into the tub, allowing space so that the pieces don't hit each other.
- 2). Leave the parts to soak in the tub for about half an hour.
- 3). Remove all of the pieces and rinse carefully with warm water. Wipe them down or leave them on the towel to dry.
- 4). Clean the valve casings thoroughly with the cleaning brush, or with twisted pieces of paper towel. Wipe down the valves with the cleaning cloth or paper towel.
- 5). Reassemble the trumpet, taking care to grease all slides and work the grease in well. Wipe away any extra grease. Oil the valves and place them in the casings. Make sure they are in the correct positions by finding the numbers etched into the metal. (Valve 1 is closest to the mouthpiece.) Polish the trumpet if desired.
