Photographer"s List of Issues to Consider When Beginning a New Business
A photography business is no different.
The following is a helpful, albeit far from comprehensive, list of questions that should be asked before forming photography business strategy.
How complex will be your offering? If you offer a lot of products you give your clients a great deal of choice, but at the cost of greater internal complexity.
If you simply your offering you will have simpler internal offerings and a simpler sales presentation for your client but less choice.
There is not right answer but you need to find and answer that fits well within your overall strategy.
What will be your geographic reach? Are you going to try and focus on a narrow area of photography such as equestrian photography but become a nationwide expert, or do you want to become a generalist but market only to your local community.
The answer to this question will determine how your business is structured and where your resources are allocated.
Are you going to focus on high volume or high quality and high price? The answer to this question is related to where you want to spend most of your time.
If you want to spend most of your attention on the art of photography, high price low volume may be your best bet.
If you would rather spend your time running and expanding a business, you may choose lower quality and higher volume.
What is your operations strategy to deal with growth? Will you be hire on additional photographers or will you subcontract? Are you willing to allow someone else to do your editing or is that giving up too much control for you? Where will you find additional efficiencies to reduce the time spend on your workflow? The photography business is competitive.
In order to succeed a photographer needs to think carefully about his business strategy before he takes the leap into building this business.
Many photography businesses that fail do so because they do not have a clear, consistent business strategy.
The above suggestions are suggestions a potentially new photography business owner should consider before beginning this new adventure.
