Women - Set Up To Age Faster Than Men?
There has always been an underlying suspicion that women age faster than men.
A new study with irrefutable scientific evidence shows that the suspicion is now a fact.
This can't be good news for women out there, knowing that just by virtue of being women we are set up to age faster.
This goes to show why more women and more men have corrective surgery to correct this.
Unlike past studies this one paid attention to the perioral area which is the region around the mouth.
Compared to men, women have fewer sweat glands.
These are the glands responsible for producing the oil that keeps the skin soft and supple.
The women muscles here are closer to the skin than those of the men.
This causes skin to be pulled in tighter and eventually causes wrinkles.
Although the number of hair follicles in both men and women are the same, men have more sweat gland per hair follicle and this ensures a more relaxed skin throughout the aging process.
Turns out it's a good thing to have more sweat glands after all! The hormonal composition in women also plays a role in the skin's aging process.
The estrogen produced in women helps in healing.
Therefore women tend to heal faster from wounds than men.
Unfortunately as they age, they experience reduced blood flow again contributing to the wrinkles and the fat secreted by their sweat glands also decreases.
So first we get fewer sweat glands and then ours actually reduce production over the years.
Other changes that happen in the body include the bones shrinking.
With age the jaw bone gets reabsorbed gradually causing the shrinking.
The skin then sags because there's no scaffolding to hold it up.
Body tissues also get thinner with age.
There is relief in knowing that findings have shown HRT works for women.
Women on hormone replacement therapy have been reported to have fewer wrinkles than those not on HRT.
A great difference can be made also by healthy living, eating healthy food, avoid smoking and getting too much sun on the skin.
It is advisable to use suitable sunscreens and to keep the skin moist by use of moisturizers and skin creams.
