Windows XP Step-by-Step Startup
- If you are upgrading to Windows XP from an earlier edition of Windows, back up any information you wish to keep. This can be done by saving it onto a different hard drive or onto a removable disk. When Windows XP is installed, it will format the hard drive, which completely removes everything on it.
- Insert the Microsoft Windows XP installation disk into the computer. Restart the computer. An option will ask if you would like to boot from the CD. Agree to this by hitting the "Spacebar." Press "Enter" when the Welcome to Startup page appears. Scroll down and read the license agreement. Press "F8" when you are done. This signifies that you have read and accept the license agreement. You will be asked if you have backed up any information you wish to save. Press "D" to signify that you have. If you haven't, escape the setup, back up your files and restart the installation process. This will be the last time you will have to save your information. Press "L" to erase the hard drive.
- Once the hard drive has been cleared, press "Enter" to select "Unpartitioned Space." This is the hard drive you just cleared. Press "Enter" again to select "Format the partitioned using NTFS file system." This formats your hard drive, which will take 20 to 30 minutes depending on the size of the drive. Your computer will restart automatically.
- The computer will restart, ask you to select your settings and then ask for the production serial key. This can be found on the installation CD's case. Finish your settings selections, including the time zone, date and user profile. The computer will restart once this has been completed. When the computer finishes loading, click "OK" for the display settings and "OK" for the monitor settings. This will complete the installation setup of Microsoft Windows XP
