    Education

    • Texas teachers must have at least a bachelor's degree. Teachers must complete an approved education program as part of the bachelor's degree. If you already have a bachelor's degree in an area other than education, you can complete teacher requirements by enrolling in an alternative teacher certification program.

    Teacher Exams

    • All teachers in Texas must pass the teacher exam that correlates with the grade levels and subject areas they plan to teach. The tests are administered by Education Testing Service at testing sites across the state of Texas. To find out what tests to take and to register for tests, visit the Education Testing Service website (see Resources).

    Licensing

    • Texas teacher certification consists of applying for and obtaining a teaching license. Teachers should apply for a teaching license after completing an education program and passing the required exams. You must pass a fingerprint background check. As of 2011, the fingerprinting fee is $42.25. To submit an application, create an account on the Educator Certification Online system and complete the application process as directed by the online system.

    Salary

    • The Texas Education Agency sets minimum teacher salaries for all Texas independent school districts. First-year teachers must earn a minimum salary of $27,320, as of 2011. Salaries increase with each year of teaching experience. A teacher with 20 or more years of teaching experience must earn a minimum salary of at least $44,270, as of 2011. Texas school districts may choose to use their own salary schedule with higher salaries, if desired.
