When to Cut Dahlias
- The dahlia blooms shouldn't be cut until the flower is fully open. This occurs during the later part of the summer. Cut in the morning when the dew is still on the stalks and stems to increase the moisture content.
- Cut the stem with a sharp knife or garden shears. Cut the stem at a point where enough of the stem remains with the flower to allow the chosen display method.
- Place the end of the flower stem in warm water immediately after cutting. Soak the flower stem for a few minutes before removing from the water and clipping off the bottom 1/4 inch of the stem. Extend the life of the cut flower by changing the water in the vase every other day or adding a floral preservative to the water.
- Dahlia blooms left on the plant should be removed after the bloom begins to dry or die. This removes the unattractive post-bloom portion of the plant and improves the overall look of the garden. Removing dead blooms also extends the blooming period with the dahlia setting additional blooms in the same growing season.
