How to Decorate Flower Boxes for Spring

    • 1). Paint old or new flower boxes with colors to match the house and trim. Use a sponge or cloth to wash the flower boxes with a mild detergent and warm water solution. Remove loose paint from an old flower box with a wide, flat-edge tool, such as a putty knife. Paint a coat of latex primer on the box and allow the primer to dry. Paint two coats of exterior latex on the box. Allow the first coat to dry before adding the second coat of paint.

    • 2). Design a template using thin cardboard to paint a picket fence on your flower box. Measure a guideline to cut for the post. Measurements will vary depending on the size of the flower box. However, 5 inches long and 3/4-inch wide will work for most boxes. Shape the top of the post template to form a point. Cut out the template and trace the outline on the flower box. Space each post an inch apart. Connect the posts to look like a picket fence with two 1/2-inch wide lines going horizontally through the posts. Place the lines one inch from the top (not including the point) and bottom of the post. Use exterior latex paint to paint the fence white.

    • 3). Select stencils in flower designs or animals to give your flower box a whimsical look. Arrange and tape the stencil to the box. Pour a small amount of exterior latex paint into a shallow aluminum dish. Dip a stencil brush into the paint and gently dab paint into the cut-out sections of the stencil. Remove the stencil when the paint has dried. Place the stencil in another area and repeat, or choose a different stencil design.
