How to Repair a Shakespeare Dimension Reel
- 1). Unscrew the large cap screw at the end of the reel housing. This is a large gold-colored dial. Turn it counter-clockwise to remove. Once off, pull the reel housing off the setup.
- 2). Unscrew the bail cast wire -- the semicircle-shaped metal wire that holds the fishing line in position. There is one screw on either side of the wire where it is attached to the reel. Pinch the wire bail at the edges and pull it from the reel. Use the vise grips if needed.
- 3). Inspect the wire for bends or metal fatigue. If there is a bend of more than 45 degrees in the original semicircle shape, discard the wire and use replacement wire. If the bend is slight, use the vise grips to bend the wire back to its original semicircle position.
- 4). Push out the two ball bearings along the left side of the spool. These two bearings are housed in a small cartridge cylinder. Place the tip of the small screwdriver into the cartridge and pop the bearings out. Push the two replacement bearings into the reel. Do this over a piece of white paper on a bench in case you drop the small bearings. The white background makes it easier to locate them if dropped.
- 5). Add a drop of 3-in-1 oil to the handle, the edge of the spool and at the drag switch. Assemble all the pieces and go fishing.
