    Benefits

    • Tiles are waterproof and long-lasting. You can have them glazed in any color and laid in any pattern. They are smoother on your feet than concrete. Edges and borders add decorative options, as well. Tiles can be used on the pool floor, walls and perimeter.

    Types

    • Tiles come in different sizes, designs and materials. The usual sizes are 6 by 6 inches, 3 by 3 inches, 2 by 2 inches, and 1 by 1 inch. Common materials are porcelain, slate, glass, mosaic, stone and pebble. Stone, slate and pebble are more economical. All pool tiles are made of slip-resistant and non-slip materials.

    Designs

    • Mosaic tiles offer many options. They are small colored tiles that are placed in concrete to create a design. Sea life is a popular motif. Some choose to use mosaics as a focal point or to scatter them throughout the pool. Consider two or three colors to match the surroundings. Create a tile wall above the pool for an interesting focal point. For a different look, consider rectangular tiles.

    Maintenance

    • If you have tile on the floor of the pool, it is advisable to drain the pool every two years and scrub the tile. This will eliminate any mold or dirt that the pool sweeper leaves behind. This is also a good time to fix any cracks or chips. Around the pool's edge, use a brush to scrub away any stains. If a tile chips or cracks, repair it before there is water damage. Cleaners are available that will not hurt the water's pH.

    Considerations

    • If you want to create your own layout, some online companies have virtual design programs.
