Puget Sound is a system of waterways and basins connected through the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Pacific Ocean. Referred to by Seattle residents as "The Sound," the area extends from the Washington Mainland in Seattle to Bainbridge Island. The two land masses are connected through Puget Sound by the intricate Washington State Ferry system, which allows passengers and cars easy access and travel between the two land masses. Boating, whale watching and water-skiing are just a few of the activities that can be enjoyed in the waters of Puget Sound. Carkeek Park and Discover Park along Seattle's west coast offer hiking trails that travel by and through Puget Sound's coastlines.

Lake Washington, a large freshwater lake located on the eastern side of Seattle, connects Seattle to its suburban neighbors, including Bellevue, Renton and Kirkland. Two prominent architectural points of interest that connect these suburbs to Seattle are the floating bridges that cross Lake Washington on Interstate 90 and Route 520. Off the eastern shore of Seattle, Lake Washington offers residents access to beaches and swimming areas at city parks. Both Madrona Park Beach and Madison Park Beach are equipped with children's play areas and bathroom facilities. On a sunny day, Lake Washington is spotted with large numbers of boaters, windsurfers and sail boarders.

Green Lake Park, located between the Green Lake neighborhood, Wallingford, Phinney Ridge and Woodland Park, provides a much-needed green escape from the dense, urban interior of Seattle. Residents enjoy the 2.8-mile paved jogging path that circles the lake as well as the various activity offerings that spring up in the summer, including pedal-boating, concessions and sunbathing on the green areas surrounding the picturesque water. There is a wading pool in the park that is mostly attended by children. The park also features a beach, baseball fields and tennis courts.

Magnolia Hill in West Seattle is home to the 534-acre Discovery Park, a natural park that contains 12 miles of walking trails, 2 miles of protected tidal beaches, a lighthouse, sea cliffs, forest groves, sand dunes and streams. The park also houses a Native American Cultural Center called The Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center. Magnolia itself is a hilly peninsula, somewhat isolated from the rest of Seattle because the neighborhood is only connected to the city by three road bridges.
