How to Build Wood Pews
- 1). Lay the slabs of wood out together on a flat surface. Measure up from the middle corners 16 inches and make a mark on both of them. Set a compass at 15 degrees and lay it on the marks one at a time. Use a pencil to draw a line from the marks across the wood blanks to make a 15 degree line tilting from front to back across both of them.
- 2). Place one of the 1 1/4-by-1 1/4 inch screw cleats on top of each line. Pre-drill down through the cleat and then screw it to the slabs using 2 inch wood screws. Stand up the slabs. The screw cleats should be parallel facing each other running at a 15-degree angle from the front to the back of the slabs. Your seat assembly will sit on top of these screw cleats.
- 3). Clamp the 1 1/4 inch panel to the 3/4 inch panel in an "L" formation. The 3/4 inch panel should be the upright part of the "L," the pew back. The bottom of the "L" will be the seat. Use two pipe clamps to clamp the seat to the back. Using the screw gun, pre-drill with a 3/16 inch bit, and then use 1 1/2 inch screws to screw the back to the seat.
- 4). Place the slabs standing up 48 inches apart on the inside with the screw cleats facing inward. Use sawhorses to brace them from falling over.
Pick up the seat assembly and set it on the screw cleats. Place one bar clamp across the front of the pew. Place one bar clamp across the back and tighten the clamps. - 5). Flip the pew upside down. Using the cordless drill gun, pre drill down through the screw cleats into the seat. Insert 2-inch screws into the holes and screw the cleats to the seat.
Take off the clamps. - 6). Set the pew upright. Hold one screw cleat along the crack of the back and pew end on both sides. Pre-drill and screw the cleats to the back and sides of the pew ends.
