There are two types of cholesterol.
LDL is the bad cholesterol that clogs up the arteries.
High levels of LDL can lead to potential cardiac arrest when the blockage becomes too severe.
HDL is the good cholesterol and actually works in the body to keep the arteries clear by breaking off and washing away the plaque created by LDL.
Your cholesterol profile factors in the levels of good and bad cholesterol in your blood.
2.
Over one half of American men over the age of forty suffer from varying degrees of sexual impotence caused by localized artery blockages.
Smokers are twice as likely to suffer from this malady as non-smokers.
Impotence issues related to local artery dysfunction are first alert signs of future disorders of the heart and circulatory systems.
3.
There are many herbs that have been proven to improve cardio functions.
Hawthorne, motherwort, and valerian all contain substances that provide varying benefits to the heart.
Valerian contains anti-anxiety and blood pressure lowering qualities.
Hawthorne is also effective at managing blood pressure levels.
4.
A plate full of rainbows.
Vegetables come in all sorts of colors.
The brighter the color, the more heart healthy antioxidants that are present in the vegetable.
Bright red and yellow peppers are especially high in valuable, free radical fighting antioxidants.
And vegetables are best prepared by steaming them, as microwave cooking will destroy many of the nutrients.
Raw is best.
And if you have a juicer, concentrated freshly juiced vegetable juice is best of all.
5.
Multivitamins are important.
The typical diet does not provide sufficient levels of the vitamins and minerals our bodies need to function at optimum levels.
This is especially true when it comes to heart management.
Magnesium, which we don't get enough of via food, as we get older, is critical in the regulation of heartbeat.
Vitamin E, another vitamin we tend to have deficiencies of, lubricates our blood.
In the conditioned blood, platelets are less likely to stick together and form clots in the blood vessels.
6.
Homocysteine toxicity is the level of protein byproducts that are in our blood.
These byproducts act as a slow poison and encourage the thickening and eventual clotting of the blood.
Lowering homocysteine levels can be accomplished by taking a high grade B-vitamin supplement.
Most high quality men's multivitamins contain adequate levels of the critical Bs.
7.
When you cut your finger, the body's self defense mechanisms immediately kick in and form a clot to stem the bleeding.
Most heart attacks are initiated by a piece of plaque breaking off a vessel wall.
This separation results in a small wound in the blood vessel that the body treats as a normal cut.
A clot is formed at the site of the cut causing the blood vessel to contract reducing the rate of blood flow to the heart.
8..
Contrary to popular belief, although eggs and liver do contain relatively high levels of cholesterol, they are actually healthy for us in moderation.
Both foods contain ample amounts of B vitamins, protein, choline, and lecithin.
In addition, liver is low in fat and is an excellent source of folic acid and the other heart healthy B vitamins.
9.
You should be aware of the early signs of a heart attack.
These include tightness or discomfort in the chest, arms, neck, or shoulders.
If these symptoms pop up while exerting yourself in exercise or any other activity, it may be an early warning sign of angina.
Angina can lead to a heart attack if not treated.
10.
Heart attacks are not limited to the elderly.
According to statistics released by the AHA, over 150,000 people killed by heart attacks each year are under the age of 65.
In addition, one out of every twenty people under 40 has some degree of cardiovascular disease.
