How to Troubleshoot Mufflers

    • 1). Check the muffler for signs of rust. This is a common problem with mufflers, especially if you live in an area where there is a lot of moisture such as rain. Driving short distances can also contribute to rust. After a short trip, when the car is shut down, the vapors settle in the mufflers, condense and then turn to liquid.

    • 2). Check for visible signs of corrosion. Wash the underside of your car at least one time per week if you live close to the sea. This will prevent corrosion from developing in the mufflers.

    • 3). Determine if there is a decrease in gas mileage. A decrease in gas mileage may mean that your oxygen sensor is going bad, which will eventually damage the muffler.

    • 4). Determine if the floor of your car gets hot while driving or if there is a sulfur smell. This means the catalytic converter is clogged and will need to be replaced.

    • 5). Listen for an intermittent hiss or popping noise coming from the engine while driving. This may indicate there is a leak in the exhaust system. If a leak is suspected it should be checked out immediately, as it can produce carbon monoxide gas, which can be lethal.
