    Caladium

    • Caladium (Caladium bicolor) goes by a number of names including heart of Jesus, angel wings and elephant ears. This perennial tropical plant features 6-to-12-inch pink-and-green leaves that grow directly from its underground tubers, so it actually doesn't have stems. Native to forests of South America, caladium prefers well-drained soil and requires full or partial shade. These warm weather plants are hardy in USDA Zones 9 to 12. Caladium is great for adding color to areas of the garden that are too shady for most flowers. Avoid placing caladiums in direct sunlight.

    Polka-Dot Plant

    • This shade-loving plant is popular for its pink polka-dotted, dark green foliage and makes an excellent houseplant as well as ground cover for shady gardens. Native to South Africa, this plant produces oval leaves that are between 2 and 3 inches long. The polka dot plant (Hypoestes phyllostachya) is technically a perennial, but is often grown as a potted houseplant or annual bedding plant. You should water this plant regularly in the summer but keep in dry during the winter. Polka-dot plants are generally pest-free but sometimes run into problems with powdery mildew.

    Amaranthaceae "Party Time"

    • This member of the amaranthaceae family goes by two names, "party time" and "Joseph's coat." Native to Brazil, Argentina and Mexico, alternanthera ficoidea features striking dark green leaves with hot pink streaks. This tender, shade-tolerant perennial will grow in USDA Hardiness Zones 10 to 11 and prefers fertile, well-drained soil. Amaranthaceae "Party Time" works great as ground cover for the garden or as a potted indoor plant. In ideal growing conditions, mature plants produce lots of small white flowers.
