Ways to Avoid Skin Cancer

The most common form of cancer is skin cancer. It occurs when the cells of the outer skin grows abnormally. The three types of skin cancer are squamous cell, basal cell carcinoma and the melanoma. The melanoma is the most dangerous type. Here are some ways to avoid skin cancer.

1. Protect your skin. Avoid too much exposure to sunlight especially during the day, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., but we don't need to avoid it all together because it is also essential for our good health, a quick walk early in the morning may do so. Wearing sunscreen clothing, hat and sunglasses can also help to protect your skin too.

2. Make sure you use sunscreen to protect you against the harmful ultra violet rays. To make it effective you need to put enough, apply a generous amount of a moisturizer or lotion and apply it where the sun exposure is most frequent, on your face, neck and on the back of your hands. Use sunscreen even on hazy or overcast days.

3. Good diet in fruits and vegetables will help fight against skin cancer. Examples of fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C and antioxidants are as follows: broccoli, celery, peas, kale, onions, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage, beans, brussel sprouts, winter squash, cauliflower, citrus fruits, grapefruit, strawberries, cantaloupe, onion, garlic and many more. Other foods that helps prevent skin cancer are miso, tofu, soymilk, soybeans, breads, cereal, whole oath, rice, wheat, fish like tuna and salmon. These foods contain phytochemicals, beta carotene, folic acid, selenium and omega-3 fatty acids which is essential to fight skin cancer.
Any changes on your skin, especially in the size or color of a mole, or change in the appearance of a nodule, or a change in sensation, tenderness, itchiness or pain you need to tell your doctor right away. To avoid more serious symptoms, early detection is important.
