How to Identify a Florida Citrus Tree

    • 1). Measure the height of the tree with the measuring tape; use the ladder if necessary. Lemon and lime trees are among the smallest of the citrus trees, and lime trees usually stand around 13 feet tall. Lemon trees stand about 20 feet tall. Orange trees are much taller, ranging from 30 to 40 feet depending on the species. Grapefruit trees are the tallest, at 50 feet.

    • 2). Examine the leaves of the tree. Grapefruit leaves are lighter in color and 2.5 inches across, while orange tree leaves are 1.5 inches across. Lemon and lime leaves are similar in shape and size, and are a very dark green color.

    • 3). Examine the fruit of the tree, if possible. Grapefruit will be the largest of the citrus fruit, with yellow or blushing pink and yellow skin. Oranges and tangerines are varying sizes and orange in color, while lemons and limes are football-shaped and yellow and green respectively. Tasting and examining the fruit can provide an easy way to identify what type of citrus the tree is, but this can be risky if the fruit is not ripe: oranges, grapefruit and lemons all begin as sour, green fruit that resemble limes.
