How to Pack a Mover Box

    • 1). Select size-appropriate boxes for the shape and volume of your items. Buy new boxes for the best possible support, and reuse boxes only if they do not have tears, rips, holes. If the cardboard sags, purchase new boxes.

    • 2). Set up a staging area, such as a kitchen table, to pack your boxes. Place a heavy pad on the table to avoid scratches. Keep all of your supplies, such as markers, tape and packing materials close by and handy, so you don't have to move or stoop too much.

    • 3). Stand your box on end with the open side down. Fold the top flaps inward to close them. Use wide, strong packing tape to secure the seams on the bottom of the box before you begin to pack so that your things don't fall through. Use three pieces of tape, each piece over the top of the next, to ensure strength.

    • 4). Create bumpers to cushion your items. Take two pieces of newsprint and crumple them up. Take a third piece and wrap those two pieces together to create a cylindrical shape. Cover the entire bottom of the box with the bumpers for best protection. Alternately, line the box with linens, pillows or towels to provide cushion and support.

    • 5). Pack heavy items in small boxes. Use specially constructed boxes with thick walls for breakables, such as glass and china.

    • 6). Wrap each item in a sheet of newsprint to protect the item's finish and keep it from breaking. Wrap as many items as will fill the box. Place them in the box on top of the bumpers.

    • 7). Crumple more newsprint and stuff it in the empty spaces to fill air pockets and ensure that items do not move. Add another layer of bumpers to the top of the packed items. Alternately, place towels or linens on top of the packed items before you close the box.

    • 8). Close the top flaps on your box. Pick it up and shake it gently to make sure nothing is rattling around. Press down on the top to make sure it is solid and does not give.

    • 9). Add three strips of tape on the top of the box to seal it securely.

Label the box clearly with a marking pen. Mark "fragile" or "glass" if your box contains breakables. Mark the room on the box, such as "kitchen," "living room" or "master bedroom." Mark all sides of the box, so the label can be seen from any angle.
