Fire Pits & Pollution

    Identification

    • A fire pit is an outdoor area designed to contain a fire and prevent it from spreading. Fire pits burn either wood or gas and vary widely in design and style, ranging from the most basic option of a pit simply dug directly in the ground to elaborate constructions of stone, brick or metal. You can build your own fire pit or purchase a premade model from a store.

    Impacts on Health

    • The fine particles that fire produces are the components of wood smoke, which are the most dangerous to your health. Inhaling fine particles can be irritating, and potentially harmful. Mild effects include burning eyes and a runny nose, but more serious health issues can arise if you inhale a significant amount of smoke. This includes illnesses like bronchitis; moreover, existing heart conditions and lung diseases are aggravated.

    Impacts on Communities

    • The level of impact that smoke pollution has on communities depends on the geography and topography of the area. If you live in a deep valley where the air tends to stagnate, then don't use a fire pit when the air quality is already poor, such as during a smog alert. Smoke pollution can also cause problems in flat or open areas, particularly in the winter when the drop in temperature decreases airflow, and can therefore cause smoke to linger for longer periods of time.

    Other Environmental Impacts

    • In addition to the issues smoke pollution causes, fire pits have the potential to start forest fires. If you live in an area close to a forest, then exercise caution when using an outdoor fire pit. However, many communities surrounded by forests have seasonal burn bans to prevent residents from accidentally starting a forest fire while using their fire pit. For this reason, check your local fire codes before building or using a fire pit on your property.
