Mulan Birthday Party Ideas
- Start with the invitations. In the movie, the townsmen were summoned by a royal decree to join the Chinese Royal Army to fight against the Huns. Design your party invitations as if they were coming from the Chinese emperor. The setting, story and clothing of the movie most closely resemble the Northern Wei Dynasty in China (386-534 A.D.). Use symbols from this dynasty and the movie to decorate your home.
For example, the lotus flower was a beautiful symbol of purity and cleanliness in ancient China. Make your own lotus blossom flowers out of tissue paper. Cut long sheets of white or pink tissue paper into long, thin petal shapes. Ball up a sheet of yellow paper for your center. Glue the strips of paper all around the center to create the flower. Hang them on the walls or use as a centerpiece. - The dragon was also a symbol in ancient China of power and wisdom. For your party, make dragon balloon animals. Another idea is to blow up helium balloons and on each balloon, write one of the words that Mulan had to learn for her meeting with the matchmaker. They are: loyalty, wisdom, beauty, respect, humor, honesty, tradition, wisdom, coordination, friendship, self-assurance, determination, strength, elegance, balance and good luck.
- When Mulan went the matchmaker, she had to dress in traditional Chinese clothing and make-up. For an activity at your party, hand out white foam plates, cut out pieces of a face such as eyes, nose and lips, and let the girls decorate their own plates. When they have the faces put together, give them crayons to add make-up and beads to make earrings.
- For your cake, you can easily make large Chinese fans. Start with a large round cake. Cut it in half and then again in quarters. Turn each piece so the point is down. It will look like a fan. Use white icing to cover them and decorate any way you wish.
A unique party favor is a cricket. Your guests will be delighted to receive their very own crickets in ventilated jars, much like the small cage Mulan carried in the movie. The cricket in the film was given to Mulan for good luck. Crickets can be purchased at a pet store, and if your guests' parents disapprove, they can set them free.
