    Establishment

    • 1). Prepare a planting location that is adequate for this type of grass. Bahia grass performs moderately well in the shade, and it is adapted to soils that are sandy or loamy. It will survive soil that is soggy. The pH of the soil should range between 4.0 and 6.5.

    • 2). Establish your Bahia grass with seed or with sod during the spring or early summer.

    • 3). Irrigate Bahia grass heavily once a day or lightly twice a day until it is properly established. After the plant has taken hold, watering will become much less frequent.

    Watering

    • 1). Water Bahia grass when the leaf blades begin to fold up or when they acquire a greyish tinge.

    • 2). Set out a sprinkler and place coffee cans around the lawn. The coffee cans will allow you to measure how much water is getting into the soil.

    • 3). Give the soil 8 inches of water, as measured in the amount that is in the coffee cans. If you time the watering, you can figure out how long it takes to get 8 inches of water into the soil.

    Maintenance

    • 1). Mow bahia grass whenever it grows between 2 and 4 inches. If the grass matures, it will develop unattractive forked seed heads.

    • 2). Choose fertilizer than has iron added to it, especially if the pH of your lawn is in the high range for Bahia grass.

    • 3). Fertilize Bahia grass once a year. Use 1/2 lb. water-soluble nitrogen for every 1000 square feet of lawn.
