How to Upgrade Intake Gaskets for 4.3L
- 1). Open the hood to access the engine. Unscrew the bolt that holds the cable to the negative terminal on the battery. Set the cable aside so that it grounds itself to any part of the engine or frame.
- 2). Position a clean pan underneath the drain plug of the radiator. Twist off the radiator filler cap and place to the side. Open the drain plug, allow all of the engine coolant to flow into the pan and replace the plug when finished.
- 3). Tag all electrical wiring and hoses that connect to the intake manifold and nearby parts. Unfasten the air intake box and remove the air filter from within this housing unit. Unscrew the bolts and remove the filter box from the engine, placing aside for later use.
- 4). Unscrew the electrical wiring from behind the alternator. Unscrew the bolts that hold the alternator together and set aside for later use. Pull the vacuum hoses from the throttle body carefully with a pair of pliers. Remove the distributor cap and unfasten the electrical wiring from their respective spark plugs.
- 5). Unbolt the intake manifold from the engine block and lift slowly away from the engine. Pry the old intake manifold gaskets from the engine surface and dispose of properly.
- 6). Stuff the cylinder ports with clean rags to protect while you are cleaning. Scrape all grime or other build-up from the engine surface. Apply engine degreaser liberally with a cloth to wipe away any remaining dirt and debris.
- 1). Apply a thin coat of gasket sealant to both sides of the new intake manifold gaskets. The sealant will securely bond the gaskets to the engine block and intake manifold, preventing leaks from occurring. Position the new intake manifold gaskets so that the holes line up perfectly with cylinder ports.
- 2). Lower the intake manifold into place, ensuring that the holes align with the newly-installed manifold gaskets. Screw each of the bolts of the intake manifold, one turn at a time for each, until secure. Apply 35 foot-pounds of pressure to the lower bolts and 10 foot-pounds of pressure to the upper bolts using a torque wrench.
- 3). Reinstall all of the electrical wiring, hoses and parts that were removed to access the intake manifold gaskets.
- 4). Pour the engine coolant back into the radiator and replace the radiator filler cap.
- 5). Reattach the cable to the negative terminal on the battery. Start the engine and check for leaks near the new manifold gasket.
