- A set of long, flowing curtains can also work as a headboard behind the bed. Hang the curtains high enough so the hems reach to the floor behind the bed. For a three-dimensional effect, hang a cornice box from the ceiling and a pair of drapes on each side, so the curtains frame the head of the bed. If you prefer, suspend a large piece of fabric from a wire instead of using curtains and a curtain rod.
- Hang a large, rectangular mirror behind and just above the bed to make a headboard that grabs attention. If you're using a heavy, large mirror, be sure to use hardware that will support its weight. To create a more modern look, arrange a collection of smaller, square mirrors next to each other in the shape of a large rectangle or other geometric shape. You can also use a group of small, round mirrors to create a visually interesting headboard.
- Pull the bed out from the wall a bit and slide a bookcase or a pair of bookcases behind it to serve as both a storage area and a headboard. You'll lose the bottom few shelves on the bookcase, but should have plenty of storage for your bedside reading, an alarm clock and other necessities. To conceal the shelves, attach an adhesive-backed strip of hook and loop closure to the top edge of the bookcase, then attach the other half of the closure to the edge of a piece of fabric. Drape the fabric in front of the bookcase.
- Hang an arrangement of framed photographs and other pictures behind the bed for a headboard that you can change with the seasons. Arrange square picture frames in a grid pattern or get creative and set them in a free-form shape. Use photographs of your family or postcards that inspire you. When you get tired of the images, take the frames down and slide new pictures in.
