Tips for Rottweiler Training

A common theme in all dog training is understanding that in their little dog societies, someone has to be the 'alpha.
'The job is earned aggressively and once established, the role in not likely given up until that alpha shows overt signs of weakness and is overrun by a younger, stronger male.
In a human to dog relationship, the puppy will seek a dominant role until it is properly trained to understand that the owner is the strongest and is the 'alpha' in the relationship.
Rottweilers, while very strong and sturdy dogs that were bred specifically for work, do not have many variations in the rules that must be followed to turn the animal into an obedient and loyal partner.
The key difference may be that, being strong AND intelligent, the rottweiler will push the owner a little bit harder to test his or her authority.
Once the owner has passed the rotty's 'tests,' the dog will gladly fall into its role as a follower.
Like with other strong-willed breeds, here are a few quick tips for turning your rottweiler into a loyal and obeying pet:
  • Feed the dog only during scheduled feeding.
Follow the vet's advice and the recommendations from the dog food manufacturer for portion sizes.
As rottweilers are usually big and heavy dogs, a rotty owner can expect to have a higher dog food bill than the typical dog owner.
If the dog becomes rowdy around feeding time, simply set the food somewhere he cannot get it and walk away.
Do not give positive reinforcement to his wildness if this is a behavior you would the dog to avoid.
  • While some dogs are find lap dogs, rottweilers certainly are not.
The last thing an owner should want is the big dog to consider the idea of randomly sitting on someone's lap as an acceptable behavior.
If, as a puppy, he attempts to sit on your lap, simply stand up, command him to sit, and only then proceed to give him the attention he loves.
  • An owner should spend plenty of outside time with the dog.
Rottweilers love to show off and will have a great time running around the yard, playing games and taking commands from its master.
Rottweilers may be good candidates for Schutzhund training if the owner has an interest.
This breed of dog is known for its loyalty, courage, and obedience if properly trained.
