How to Paint Wood Paneling With Oil Based Paint
- 1). Clean the wood paneling with a pressure washer if it is outdoors. Wait 1 to 3 hours for the wood paneling to dry. Dust indoor wood paneling with a broom and then wipe it down with a tack cloth.
- 2). Cover flooring with plastic drop cloths. Lay fabric drop cloths on top of the plastic ones. Cover areas on and adjacent to the wood paneling you do not want painted with a low-tack painter's tape.
- 3). Wear a respirator if you are working indoors.
- 4). Coat the wood paneling with an oil-based primer, using the roller. Apply primer to portions of the wood paneling, inaccessible to the roller, using a paintbrush, manufactured for use with oil paints. Wait two hours for the primed paneling to dry.
- 5). Wash the painting tools with mineral spirits.
- 6). Coat the primed paneling with an oil-based paint. Apply paint to the wood paneling just as you did the primer. Use a new, clean roller cover. Wait two hours for the paint to dry. Add another coat if the primer shows through.
