How to Repair an iMac G5 iSight
- 1). Power down your G5 iMac and remove the power cord. Remove any USB or FireWire peripheral devices, including the keyboard and mouse. Let the iMac set for 15 minutes to allow cool down if you were using it just prior to working on it. Carry the iMac to the work table and set it gently on the soft towel on the table. Lay the iMac flat on its monitor carefully with the bottom part toward you.
- 2). Use your Phillips screwdriver to loosen the two screws securing the RAM chip grid door located in the center of the bottom panel. These screws do not come out, only release their grip on the iMac. Pull out the RAM chip door and set it aside. Along the top edge of the bottom, locate three Torx T8 screws and remove them.
- 3). Turn your G5 iMac over so the monitor faces upward. Push in the two RAM clips in the bottom while lifting the front cover bezel of the iMac to clear them. Stand the iMac up on its stand, then use an old credit or debit card to disengage the front bezel from the computer. Insert the card into the air vent near the left corner and push upward. This releases the clamp. Do the same on the other corner.
- 4). Reposition the iMac so the monitor faces upward again. Raise the front cover bezel so it is loose on the iMac. Do not pull it off because cables still connect it to the computer. Carefully flip the front bezel to reveal the iSight camera and connecting cables. The iSight cable connect will be bound to the microphone cable by tape. Take the tape off, then disengage both connectors.
- 5). Place the front bezel upside down on the work table so the inside is up. Note the location of the circuit board that controls the iSight camera at the inside top of the front bezel. Remove any tape on this circuit board. Apply your T6 screwdriver to the two screws securing the iSight board.
- 6). Take the iSight board out of the front bezel and examine it closely. Look for scorch marks or any obvious damage to the board. Next, check the iSight camera itself and all of its wiring. Look for loose connections and breaks in the wires, particularly near the camera lens or the cable connector.
- 7). Repair any wire breaks or fraying with electrical tape or solder. If the iSight camera board appears damaged, replace it with a new one. The same goes for the iSight camera itself. Only attempt repairs if they appear simple, unless you are highly skilled with such electronics and a soldering gun. Reverse Steps 6 to 1 to reassemble you G5 iMac.
