How Does a Professional Skier Make Money?

    Sponsorships

    • Sponsors are generally businesses that are in some way associated with the skiing world, and see a close tie with a professional skier as likely to be profitable. Sponsorships can range in monetary value, while some sponsors may offer products, discounts or services in exchange for a professional skier endorsing and/or representing them. Some sponsors may pay the expenses for a professional skier (such as airfare, hotel costs and equipment) in exchange for a skier's affiliation. Other sponsorships may involve a regular salary or commission for the skier in exchange for this representation.

    Advertising

    • Advertising opportunities are similar to sponsorships, but are usually more straightforward. The professional skier receives a certain amount of money in exchange for participating in some sort of advertising for a particular product or business. An advertising contract can be a one time, short-term arrangement, or it can be a long-term business relationship.

    Winnings

    • Winnings are the cash and/or product rewards of a skiing competition. A professional skier who takes part and places well in various competitions and events can make money from doing so. The bigger and more competitive the event, generally, the larger the winnings. If a professional skier also has sponsors who are funding her expenses to participate in the competition, such competitions can become quite lucrative. Additionally, participating in and winning events attracts the attention of more potential sponsors and often helps a professional skier to gain big name advertising contracts.
