What Is DPOF in Cameras?
- DPOF was created by a slew of the biggest camera manufacturers in 1988. Those that helped pioneer this idea were Eastman Kodak, Matsushita Electric Industrial Company, Fujifilm and Canon, Incorporated. This first DPOF format reigned until the year 2000, when a new version was implemented with updated information, making it compatible with all of today's cameras.
- DPOF revolutionized the way photos were handled by professional photographers, and allowed so many more options than standard cameras. In one tiny text file, stored on the same card as the images, massive amounts of information could be quickly and effectively transferred to the printer, making custom print options a breeze.
- The DPOF files are there to communicate to the printer which files are to be printed, what size the prints should be, the titles of prints and all trimming and rotation instructions. In this way, the user is able to get exactly what they want without cumbersome conversations or lengthy notes.
- DPOF cameras are much more expensive than a run of the mill digital camera, and therefore whether you actually need the DPOF function or not should be decided before purchase. DPOF cameras are most often used by professional photographers, private investigators or reporters, and are not necessarily needed for every day picture taking.
- One of the biggest benefits of a DPOF compatible card and camera is the ability to order multiple prints of some images, and one or no prints of others. Under normal conditions, one must get the same number of prints for the entire card--not so with DPOF. Also, certain images can be printed larger or smaller than other images, have the date and time stamp removed or added, or be rotated as per the desire of the photographer. All this would be very expensive and time-consuming with a regular digital camera.
