How to Design Your Own Manga
- 1). Browse through your favorite manga book, website or drawings. Pay attention to details, proportions, points of view, etc. Studying various manga styles is a good first step.
- 2). Choose where you would like to start. Some artists like to start by drawing the head, while others like to begin by drawing the body. The basic shape of a manga character is very similar to a regular human shape. Use a model or a photo of someone to use as a reference for sketching out their shape, paying attention to proportions.
- 3). Add details to your drawing. Once again, you can start with clothing or facial features. Manga has a very distinct style for facial features; big, gleaming eyes and a small, pointed nose. Manga features are usually exaggerated and very cartoon-like.
- 4). Create a storyline. What do you want your manga to be about? Is it a fantasy? A drama? Make a list of ideas for your plot and build on the ones that most interest you. For example, you may want your story to be a fantasy about your character finding a unique creature. What makes the creature unique? Is it the last of its kind? Is it the first of its kind? What does it look like? What characteristics does it possess? Is it fun and playful or mean?
- 5). Put it all together. Once you have created your character(s) finished and a cohesive storyline, bring them together. Build your story in a blank book or on looseleaf paper.
