Round 17
Sydney Roosters vs Cronulla Sharks
Stadium: Allianz Stadium, Sydney
Date: Saturday 05 july 2014
Time: 19:30 PM (AEDT)
Wow. Cronulla could not have asked for a worse matchup after their week from hell, tackling the defending premiers on their home turf. This could get very, very ugly with Cronulla missing a host of players and are without a coach with assistant James Shepherd the interim interim coach.
The Roosters have lost Daniel Tupou, Aidan Guerra and Boyd Cordner to Origin duty. They are replaced by Nene McDonald, Remi Casty and Kane Evans with Dylan Napa starting. The Sharks have lost Paul Gallen and Luke Lewis, while Todd Carney was this week sacked. Fa'amanu Brown starts at five-eighth while Tinrau Arona and Bryce Gibbs start. Tupou Sopoaga, Junior Roqica, Sione Masima and Pat Politoni join the bench.
Cronulla have won just one of their last five against the Roosters with the Chooks holding a 15-6-1 record against the Sharks in their last 22 matchups. Their last meeting at Allianz Stadium was in Round 19 last year, where the Roosters won 40-0. The Roosters have won eight of their last 10 against the Sharks at the venue. Four of the last five between the two sides have tallied 40-plus. Roosters prop Sam Moa made his debut for the Sharks while Cronulla backrowers Anthony Tupou and Tinirau Arona are ex-Roosters. Interim Sharks coach James Shepherd played all six of his first grade games for the Roosters (1992-94).
The Sydney Roosters enter this off a close loss to Manly but have won seven of their previous nine encounters and sit fifth on the ladder with a second best differential of +106. They have the top attack in the game and rank third in defence. They are 5-2 at Allianz this year with all five wins coming by 14-plus. Against bottom five teams this year they are 4-0 with an average winning margin of 14.25. Cronulla recorded a memorable 24-22 win last week in Brisbane, coming from 22-0 after three straight scoreless matches, a 106-year premiership record. The Sharks are last on the ladder with an NRL worst -159 differential, an attack that ranks four points per game lower than the second worst and the 15th ranked defence. Against top five teams they are 0-5 with an average losing margin of 21.6 and a total of just 26 points in those five games.
