Skin care is becoming a big deal these days, especially when it comes to natural skin care. With so many factors that can affect your skin day to day, it may not be on the top of your list of things to think about. As we age the outer layer of our skin thins and other contributing elements can make our skin age prematurely.

Our skin protects us from the environment, helps control body temperatures, and it contains nerve receptors for our sense of touch. Those receptors help us feel pain, pressure and sends information back to our brains about what we are feeling. The skin is made up of many layers, but is usually divided into three main parts.

€ Outer Part - (epidermis) - skin cells, pigment, & proteins

€ Middle Part - (dermis) - blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, & oil glands

€ Inner Layer - (subcutaneous) - sweat glands, blood vessels, & fat

Such things as environmental factors, our genetics, nutrition, and most importantly sun exposure are what affect our skin. Our work environments contribute to how our skin ages. If you work in factory, outside, where you use chemicals, or other things that skin can be exposed to, it can negatively show. When we do not give ourselves enough hydration, our skin is one of the first things to let us know. Dry, scaly, cracked skin will eventually age drastically if not taken care of. Of course, exposure to the sun has the biggest negative affect on our skin. Avoiding long periods in the sun without protection can increase healthy looking skin.

With age, the different layers of the skin start to lose its strength. The number of pigment-containing cells tends to decrease so aging skin looks thinner, paler, & clear. Blood vessels of the middle part of our skin usually become more fragile which causes bruising, bleeding under the skin and similar conditions. The inner layer fat starts to thin leaving less insulation and padding. As we age we produce less oil which makes it harder to keep the skin moist causing dryness and itchiness. Since your skin is thinner and more fragile it is prone to increased injury. More than likely, your skin will be less sensitive to touch, pressure, heat & cold.

It is very important to keep your skin healthy. There are many different factors that can cause your skin to age prematurely, but if you take care of it now, the risks are greatly reduced.
