How to Diagnose & Repair LCD Monitors
- 1). Unplug the power cable that connects your computer monitor to the surge protector or wall outlet supplying power.
- 2). Test the power cable with a multimeter that can check for continuity problems that can result in no power or intermittent power. All multimeters are different, so if you don't know how to use yours, you should read the instructions before testing your power cable to get accurate results. Multimeters are widely available through hardware stores, professional audio-supply shops and through numerous online retailers. Replace the power cable with the same type of cable if you determine a faulty power cable is the cause of the problem.
- 3). Check that the power cable input on your LCD computer monitor is functioning properly by testing it with your multimeter. The process for checking power inputs is different than checking a power cable, so make sure you know how to perform the procedure before beginning for the best results. Do not attempt to replace the power cable input yourself. That repair needs to be done by a qualified technician.
- 4). Test the VGA, DVI or HDMI cable you are using to connect your monitor to your computers video card with a multipurpose cable tester. Again, different brands of cable testers have different instructions; make sure you know how to use yours properly. Replace the cable if it is determined to be faulty.
