Syracuse Wood Working, D.I.Y. Tips for Home Improvement

101 9
It's a Guy thing!  I don't care what some guys say, MOST of us love getting out in our workshop and 'Improving the Home'!

One of the most watched programs on TV is the woodworking, home improvement-new gadget-new tools tools section. For the last few years, it has fast created its own market, consisting of ads from hardware  stores-power tool manafacureres, Home and Garden Magazines etc. My God, I cannot go to a country  field day, farmers market or agricultural show and leave with out buying SOMETHING! OK I have a very  well tooled workshop! There is not many Woodworking projects that I cannot tackle. One of the  advantages of working with wood is that you can dismantle your failures, and start again, and learn from  any mistakes that may have caused you to abort and restart.
But I insist on creating and working from a blueprint, for the simple reason that if you follow the plan  precisely, and adhere to the measurements exactly, in theory and in practice you should not fail, right?

So rule one, follow a Blueprint-Plan.

However, what if you wish to create your own plan-project?
You do not have to start out designing and building a new Gorilla House enclosure to erect in the local  Zoo, start out small and basic, such as a large Rabbit Hutch to give to the Kids, and move up to a  Chicken Coop- Garden Shed- Greenhouse, or even a Pigeon loft. Which is exactly what I did! So I am  talking from experience. (The Rabbit Hutch I designed, falls into the category 'Personal Woodworking Endeavours' ...the poultry house and the others listed, I used plans.) I personally endorse ALWAYS using plans, for the simple reason that all of the materials are listed in the exact sizes that your project requires, together with all of the hinges, screws, nails, glue etc.

When I take my list to the store/lumber yard, I can mostly get items cut to size for me. I tote the lot back to my shop, and it is virtually a simple task of following the plans, and assembling what is almost 'painting by numbers'

A good book of plans will include all kinds of easy to build furniture plans. such as a simple book case, coffee table, bedside cabinets, even your own wood working bench in your revered workshop! Even a Rocking Horse if you have the talent. The list is endless, so get started, and happy furniture making!

One of the nice satisfying sides to creating and building with wood is being able to create, build, and give the the finished article as a gift for any occasion. Visit us to get started for Christmas.
